Discovery Communications is moving into the formats sales business for the first time and will launch its new formats division at MIP TV.
The move will see the programme distribution arm of the factual channel operator sell formats based on a number of its Discovery brands including Bear Grylls’ wildlife series Man vs. Wild, dog grooming reality series Groomer Has It, which airs on Animal Planet, TLC’s Battle of the Wedding Planners and motorbike series American Chopper.
“It’s a new and exciting time for Discovery as we move into the formats arena. Formats are becoming increasingly more popular in the industry as they provide a cost effective solution to third parties. They enable producers to invest as much – or as little – into the production as long as it holds true to the format requirements,” says Nicolas Bonard, senior vice president, Discovery Enterprises International.
