Moshi Monsters has been forced to call off plans to release a single from Moshi Monsters character Lady Goo Goo after pop superstar Lady Gaga took out an injunction.
Moshi Monsters is an online world aimed at kids aged 7 to 12 years old and allows them to adopt and care for a pet monster. It has 50 million users and is owned by Mind Candy, which had planned to launch “The Moshi Dance” single on iTunes via its newly formed division Moshi Music. However, Lady Gaga’s legal team put paid to the plans with an injunction preventing the release.
It prevents Mind Candy from “promoting, advertising, selling, distributing or otherwise making available to the public The Moshi Dance OR any musical work or video which purports to be performed by a character by the name of Lady Goo Goo, or which otherwise uses the name Lady Goo Goo or any variant thereon”.
“This court ruling is a huge disappointment. It’s pretty obvious that kids will be able to tell the difference between the two characters,” said Michael Acton Smith, founder and CEO of Mind Candy and creator of Moshi Monsters.
He added: “The shame is that millions of kids fell in love with Lady Goo Goo’s debut single on YouTube and now won’t be able to enjoy her musical exploits. It was all done in the name of fun and we would have thought that Lady Gaga could have seen the humour behind this parody.”
