China’s CCTV to remake Sony’s Dancing Nation

Chinese broadcaster CCTV is launching a local version of Sony’s dance competition format Dancing Nation.

This marks the latest high-profile international format to launch in the country following deals for Masterchef, Cash Cab and The Voice. Sony Pictures Television sold a local version of music format The Sing-Off to Chinese broadcaster Shenzen Satellite TV earlier this year.

Sony Pictures Television’s joint venture production company Huaso Productions will produce the format in association with CCTV. It also marks the first time that the format has been remade in Asia following deals across Latin American in Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina.

Dancing Nation sees people combine to raise money for local charities through a series of team dance routines. CCTV will air 10x1hour episodes starting in February.

“Dancing is a universal language that transcends all cultural barriers,” said Mary Chan, VP, production, Asia-Pacific, Sony Pictures Television. “Combining a sense of community with good will, Dancing Nation will spark audience participation and engage viewers across the entire region. The new series further illustrates formats as an excellent source of successful programming that’s culturally relevant, especially in Asia-Pacific.”
