Disney/ABC Television Group has cancelled ABC Family ballet drama Bunheads.
The first season of the show had rated lower than The Lying Game, which ABC Family canned last week, meaning it has been on thin ice for some time now despite positive critical reviews.
The show follows a Las Vegas show girl who, after getting married on an impulse, begins teaching at a ballet school alongside her mother-in-law.
“Bunheads is a wonderful series that we are very proud to have aired,” the network said in a statement. “The series had amazing storytelling, the most talented cast and a passionate and loyal fan base.
“Recognising all of this, we took extra time to try and find ways to bring the series back for another season, but in the end it simply wasn’t possible. We wish the cast and crew the best in their future endeavours.”
Internationally, the series sold channels including Fem in Norway and Kanal 5 in Sweden.
