Discovery Communications’ Discovery Familia has acquired preschool series Monster Math Squad, which will go out under the moniker Matemonstruos on the US Hispanic net.
The DHX Media-distributed show will be stripped through the week on the channel as part of a back-to-school block of programming.
The show is about a team of number-crunching monsters who use maths to solve problems and will form part of a wider corporate initiative at Discovery to promote the importance of educational programming and careers related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among Hispanic viewers.
“By 2040, Hispanics are expected to account for 30 percent of the US population. However, Hispanic participation in STEM careers is way below desired levels,” said Bilai Joa Silar, VP, content at Discovery Familia. “We are proud to be able to collaborate in this initiative through our children’s programming, which aims to encourage kids to think independently and help them acquire skills and habits that will be useful throughout their lives.”
Discovery Familia’s other back-to-school programming includes the curriculum based series Artzooka!, which is part of 9 Story’s catalogue after it acquired CCI’s titles, and Mister Maker from Zodiak Kids.
