Former Angry Birds man hatches new plan in Cannes

The ex-COO of Angry Birds creator Rovio Entertainment was in Cannes this week with a new “TV-as-a-service” platform that allows “consumers to become producers”.

Harri Koponen has created NPTV, a company behind a new technology aimed at giving viewers to capability to view multiple live feeds of TV programming at once, including graphics and custom overlay features rendered in real time.

In essence, it will allow viewers with connected TVs to control how they view programmes and delve in deeper into the shows through statistics, live previews and social media functions.

Koponen said: “Cloud technology has changed the music and film industry with services such as Spotify and Netflix, and our aim is for NPTV to be the same game changer for the broadcast industry.

“NPTV will dissolve the walls between broadcasters, viewers, content developers and advertisers offering rich interactive capabilities within TV shows that not only improve the viewer’s experience, but offer businesses and developers a new route to market.”

Koponen left Rovio to launch the new business, which he told TBI was entirely privately funded and had made “massive” investments in its technology.
