Netflix closes Canadian Disney movie deal

The Walt Disney Company movies will hit Netflix in Canada eight months after they leave theatres under terms of a new pact.

Ted Sarandos largeThis means Netflix will be the exclusive streaming home of Disney Live Action, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Disneynature and DreamWorks Studios films in the territory.

The deal begins in 2015, and its eight-month holding period before launch is quicker than traditional pay TV windows.

“We are delighted to be the new pay TV home in Canada for the world’s highest-quality, most imaginative and entertaining films,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix (pictured). “Canadians of all ages will have an incredible range of great stories and characters to look forward to.”

“Netflix continues to be a highly-valued partner on a global scale and we couldn’t be more pleased to extend our great relationship with this exciting new agreement,” said Dan Cohen, executive VP, pay television and digital, Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

Netflix launched in Canada in 2010, and earlier this year became profitable in the territory. It is now home to first-run pay TV films from Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, and 20th Century Fox.

Financial terms of the Disney deal were not revealed.
