Final stop for AMC’s Hell on Wheels

hell on wheelsAMC has called time on its Western period drama Hell on Wheels.

The US network has ordered a fifth and final season of 14 episodes, though this will be split across the summers of 2015 and 2016. The first seven will hit screens next year, with the back seven coming the following year.

AMC took a similar approach to the final seasons of Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

Hell on Wheels – developed at Endemol USA, which then coproduced it with Entertainment One and Nomadic Pictures – follows the drama surrounding the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 19th century America, focusing on a revenge-seeking former Confederate soldier.

“With season five of Hell on Wheels, we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has traveled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years,” said AMC president Charlie Collier.

Endemol Worldwide Distribution has European rights to the show, with eOne selling it elsewhere.
