The deal means that all of the European Sky operations will show the gritty thriller series, which is about to have its world premiere at the Berlinale festival.
All of the European Sky services – Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the UK – will now launch the drama on the same day, March 24. This is the second time they have take this approach since merging last year and a sign of increased cooperation and coordination on the programming front. Fortitude was the first simultaneous launch, late last month.
1992 is a dramatised version of events surrounding the Mani Pulite (Clean Hands) judicial investigation into corruption in Italy in the 1990s, which saw politicians and industry leaders accused of various crimes. It was created by Italian actor Stefano Accorsi, who also stars in the series.
The 10-part one-hour drama is made by Italian prodco Wildside and distributed by Beta Film, which struck the Sky UK and Germany deal.
Italian drama has come to the fore in the wake of the success of Italian mob drama Gomorrah, which was a hit for Sky Italia and sold well internationally, with Beta Film again on distribution duty.
1992 will now launch on Sky in Italy, Germany and the UK simultaneously on March 24.
“We are excited to add another outstanding TV Series from our partners Sky Italia and Beta Film to our growing portfolio of series on Sky Atlantic HD in Germany, Austria, the UK and Ireland,” said Gary Davey, the recently-appointed executive VP, programming at Sky. “Hot on the heels of our Fortitude simulcast, another breakthrough series with a great story from the old world from the new European Sky family”.
Beta Film CEO Jan Mojto added: “After Gomorrah, sold by Beta to over 100 territories worldwide, 1992 is the latest example of high-ranking series made for Sky Italia, designed to be successful not only in its home market but also internationally.”
