Zodiak Rights has sealed German and Spanish deals for epic Canal+ period drama Versailles.
The series, set within the royal court at the titular French palace, has been picked up by SVOD service Movistar in Spain.
In Germany, local distributor SquareOne has picked it up and will sell it into German-speaking territories. The deal marks movie distributor SquareOne’s first foray into television.
Al Munteanu, CEO, SquareOne said:“SquareOne is entering an exciting new arena as the company expands into television acquisitions and production. We were always attracted to the epic nature of Versailles and our initial instincts were reconfirmed after watching the first episode and material on future episodes at the recent MIPTV market.”
The 10x60mins English-language period drama was produced by Capa Drama and Zodiak Fiction for pay TV service Canal+. Zodiak launched it internationally at MIPTV in April.
Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, CEO, Zodiak Media said:“These deals are just the start of a rapid and widespread international roll-out of Versailles. The series is another demonstration that high-end European dramas can compete with the very best American series on storytelling, talent and production values.”
