Satellite services company SES will distribute the 4K channel from US space agency NASA across North America.

The new linear channel will launch on November 1 and, via SES satellites, reach 100 million cable, satellite and IPTV homes in the US.

It will be programmed with ultra high-definition footage from the International Space Station and other NASA missions. There will also be remastered 4K footage from past NASA missions.

The space channel is being produced by NASA and TV tech firm Harmonic.

“Partnering with Harmonic gives NASA an outlet for its UHD content, which has four times the resolution of HD and is the next iteration of digital television,” said Robert Jacobs, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Office of Communications at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.

Harmonic said it is in discussion with pay TV platforms over carriage of the space channel. Peter Alexander, chief marketing officer at Harmonic said: “As NASA reaches new heights and reveals the unknown, the NASA TV UHD channel can bring that journey to life in every home.”

The roll out comes amid news of numerous new 4K channel launches. SES forecast last week that there would be 1,000 UHD channels by 2025 as sales of sets increase exponentially as prices fall.
