Kids-logo-460_2BackstageDisney Channel has acquired rights to DHX Media’s original live action performing arts drama Backstage.

The Walt Disney Company-owned network has taken rights in the US, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Nordics, Benelux, Germany, central and eastern Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Backstage comes from Canadian producer Fresh TV in association with DHX Television, the DHX unit that now houses production, channels and distributor DHX Rights.

In Canada, Family Channel will debut the 30x30mins show in spring, with Disney Channel in the UK and US debuting it around the same time, with the other territories following.

Backstage, shot in Toronto in docu-drama format, follows a group of talented teenagers at a prestigious performing arts school.

Similarly-themed high school dramas have become a calling card for DHX in recent years, with shows such as Degrassi continuing to sell well internationally.
